CERTIFICATE IN DIGITAL HEALTH COMMUNICATION

The Health Communication certificate program is the study and use of communication approaches to inform and persuade individual and community decisions as it relates to health, as well as how to recognize and evaluate communication methods that are applicable for health promotion, campaigns and wellness to improve health literacy.

 

This certificate is designed to focus on communication skills that are crucial in health care and enables leaders within the health care industry to design and implement health communication content, strategies and interventions for social media, websites, mobile technologies, graphics, audio and video that will influence and engage critical decisions involving health, increase public awareness of health issues, influence behaviors towards health and much more.

REQUIRED COURSES

           

COMM 525 – Health Communication (3)

This is a foundational course into the field of health communication theory, practice and research.  It focusing on how messages from organizations, public, media, and cultures affect health care contexts.  Students will gain understanding in health care engagement  and health care organizations through different communication channels.

 

 COMM 526 – Health Literacy (3)

This course is essential because 9 out of 10 people do not understand basic health    information; therefore, this course focuses on the issues connected to the           misinterpretations that transpire in health communication.  Students will attain, develop  and apprehend basic health information and services needed to make proper health decisions.

           

 COMM 527 – New Media, Branding and Health (3)

New Media is growing rapidly throughout the country because of the ever changing society.  This course teaches health care providers, professionals and leaders in the health care industry how to utilize and brand their company while leveraging the current trends of the media.

 

In addition, health care providers and professionals will understand the mechanism through which new media may affect health, including news coverage, health information online as it relates to individual health manners, public health policy, the possible effects of advertising health procedures online for entertainment gain.

 

COMM 528 – Health Communication Campaigns and Persuasion (3)

 This course focuses on designing and implementing persuasive messages in health communication campaigns.  These messages are designed to positively influence the        belief and behaviors of the public.  Students enrolled in this course will explore real life  health policies and concerns and examine different persuasion philosophies and    methodologies for communication campaigns, as well as develop a strategic plan to attract the target market.

 

CAP 600 – Capstone Project (1)

 Capstone projects will complete an environmental scan and solve a real problem for a  company of choice.  Communication principles taught in the certificate programs must be applied within the environment scan.  A final presentation is required. All students must gain approval for their Capstone Project within the first 3 weeks of matriculation.  After approval, students must submit their progress to the instructors every three weeks.

 

ELECTIVES

COMM 550 – Communication Research (3)

This course is designed to help students understand and become brilliant in research as it relates to communication.  Students will become knowledgeable in concepts, themes,    roles and strategies of communication research.  Research in this course includes both quantitative and qualitative research and can be steered in both academic and professional   settings.

 

         

COMM 531 – Small Group Communication (3)

This course is designed for leaders to become knowledgeable of different techniques to  lead a team successfully.  Both interpersonal and intercultural perspectives will be  included in this course.  This course is also focus on leadership skills and communication  strategies vital to creating and maintain a group.

 

COMM 532 – Integrated Marketing Communication (3)

This course focuses on the theory and practice of integrated marketing communication  and specify different expansions in the field.  Students will understand the differences, similarities and relational interest between public relations and marketing, key concepts of advertising and promotion, the effects of public opinion and crisis management.

 

COMM 533 – Crisis Communication (3)

This course examines the methods involved in crisis planning, communication and   management in both professional and academic settings.  Crisis happens each day in      companies and intelligently planning and effectively communicating to both internal and external stakeholders are critical.  Students will learn how to prepare for crisis such as  sexual harassment, professional ethics within an organization, discrimination,  manipulations, etc. to help a company keep minimize the damage of its reputation,    influence the public to understand the company’s viewpoints, and design a risk communication plan.

 

 COMM 500 – Public Speaking (3)

This course is designed to help students prepare and delivery a power speech for a pubic setting.  Students will concentrate on proper techniques on how to conduct research for a informative, persuasive, and special occasion speech.  Students will also learn how nonverbal skills play a huge role in public speaking.
